Painting Sunny Day by Mai Dantsig

I was starstrucked when I saw this painting. It had everything a good painting needs: bright colours, movement and a hardworking woman.

Reminiscing of the first sunny days in the beginning of spring

I was starstrucked when I saw this painting by the Belarusian painter, Mai Dantsig. On December 4, 1992, a Dutch newspaper ‘De Telegraaf’ published it next to an article with the title “Socialist realism is fake sentiment”.
I didn’t agree. This painting had everything a good painting needed: bright colours, movement and a hardworking woman. I still have this newspaper. The painting makes me happy and reminiscing of the first sunny days in the beginning of spring when my mother hung the bed sheets outside to dry. As a little girl I enjoyed watching the sheets dancing in the wind beneath a blue sky. It promised warmer days were coming.
